Spirituality Community & Service

Preparing a place for God, first in our hearts, and then in the world in which we live.

The Society of the Sacred Advent (SSA) has been working with women and girls in Queensland for over 125 years. Join us as we enter a new stage of community life and continue the tradition of spirituality and loving service.

“In making a place for God in our hearts and in the world in which we live, we (the SSA) are striving to do the work of creating what we might called sacred spaciousness for ourselves, so that we can model that for others and invite them into that space. Then in that space, where we hope to meet with God and hear Christ’s voice, we trust we will discover just what kinds of service we are being called to. And we help others find their call also, as they join with us in our work.”

Sr Gillian Moses SSA, homily for Religious Life Sunday 2025

Worship with us in Advent

When I am among the trees,

especially the willows and the honey locust,

equally the beech, the oaks and the pines,

they give off such hints of gladness.

I would almost say that they save me, and daily.

I am so distant from the hope of myself,

in which I have goodness, and discernment,

and never hurry through the world

but walk slowly, and bow often.

Around me the trees stir in their leaves

and call out, “Stay awhile.”

The light flows from their branches.

And they call again, “It’s simple,” they say,

“and you too have come

into the world to do this, to go easy, to be filled

with light, and to shine.”

Mary Oliver - When I am among the trees

Hope, peace, joy and love. How deeply we all look forward to the advent of a new way of being; a new way of thinking about ourselves and humanity; a new consciousness born in the complete vulnerability of an infant child. Each year, over the past 2000 years, the anticipated birth has been celebrated for the hope of peace, through love, which allows joy to flourish.

Our monthly Eucharist for December is also our annual Service of Commitment for SSA Companions and the admission of new candidates for Vowed Membership. Everyone is welcome to join us on Sunday 7 December at the Sisters Chapel, Lapraik Street Ascot, in the grounds of St Margaret’s Anglican Girls School.

Afternoon tea from 3.15pm, Eucharist at 4pm.
